about

"Just as the dust settles from 2012’s The Very Great and Horrible Harshness, here’s another home-recorded (New Haven, CT), electro-acoustic, psychedelic song cycle from Paul Belbusti, aka Mercy Choir. In all its stylistic deviations, Waabaayo may at first seem like a group of genre exercises, but repeat listens reveal a cohesive group of songs tackling some of Belbusti’s favorite themes: death, madness, confusion, and lust—all framed in rich lyrical and melodic hooks.

The “primitive” recording techniques employed here—can recording an album on an iPad really be considered primitive?—help paint an intimate space, plunging us right into Belbusti’s little world. Cozy up to the lo-fi guitar/voice “Race the Collector,” the soaring piano melodies of “Silver Bells,” the bittersweet country-folk of “Asylum Blues #6,” or the Lennonesque psych-soul of “(untitled birdwatcher),” and you’ll quickly find that Mercy Choir’s most divergent release is also its most captivating."
