about

"A stutter is apparent in the title of Mercy Choir's new record of solo piano, "PPIANO." The eponymous instrument itself stutters between the acoustic and electronic, often in a nearly ecstatic blur. In "1," the piano's tones warp and stretch into staticky clones, reiterating further and more versions of themselves. A swamp tosses up bioluminescent insects for inspection before swallowing them back into its murky engine. The worlds of "2" and "2.5 (bug throws)" mimic works in the classical canon but something's wrong. The piano has been murdered then resurrected on the internet as a glitched out tribute page to its former life. The ultimate track, "3," is more sonically straightforward though perhaps it portrays most vividly the imagination of its maker. The music on "PPIANO" is radically different than anything else we've heard from the Mercy Choir project but that doesn't mean it's a departure. Rather, "PPIANO" exposes the eclectic, creative heart which beats at the core of every Mercy Choir release."
